Ashvagandha in Sanskrit means “smelling like a horse”, probably originating from the odor of its fresh root which resembles that of a sweaty horse. Ashvagandha is a well known anti-stress herb. The species name somnifera means "sleep-bearing" in Latin, indicating it was considered a sedative, but it has been also used for sexual vitality and as an adaptogen. It is also popularly known as Indian Ginseng.

Cause: It is clearly mentioned in Ayurveda that kapha is specially aggravated by sedentary habits i.e. sitting idly or sleeping excessively, too much use of curd and its preparations, meat juices of aquatic and swampy animals, use of newly harvested cereals, preparations of jaggery and excessive use of sweets. This kapha aggravation gives rise to 20 types of urinary disorders (Prameh). Out of these 20 types, 10 are due to kapha dosha, 6 due to pitta dosha and 4 are due to Vata dosha. Diabetes (Madhumeh) is type of vataj prameh (urinary disorder). Hyperglycemia (madhumeh) and diabetes (hyperglycemia and glycosuria) is named as follows by the Ayurvedic scholars-
